Tammy's Background
Tammy Fisher Huson, Ph.D. has been an educator for 36 years. After graduating from Western Washington University in Education and teaching junior high for 11 years, she earned her Masters in Educational Psychology (professional school counseling) in 1995 from the University of Washington. She has worked with students of all levels, university to pre-school. In 2003, she received her Certificate in Child and Adolescent Psychology from the UW. In 2005, she won a Golden Apple Award for the creation and coordination of her K-8 school’s Conflict Mediator program, training and managing hundreds of students in the eleven years of her time there. In 2007, Tammy became a Certified Advanced Trainer in the Nurtured Heart Approach, later writing three books which coaching the adoption of the approach with educators and parents. (Her most recent book for educators, There’s Always Something Going Right: Workbook for Creating Truly Great Schools, is a second edition with co-author L. Triandis, and her book for parents: Fearless Parenting: Stepping into Life’s Greatest Role with the Nurtured Heart Approach c. 2013). In 2014, Tammy was named Washington State Elementary School Counselor of the Year.
Currently she works at a Pre-K to 8th grade school in Medina, WA as their first school counselor. She is also an adjunct professor in the School Counseling Masters program at Seattle Pacific University, where she received her Ph.D. in 2019. Her research and continued work focuses on the impact of educator mindsets on the teacher-student relationship. Her post-doc efforts continue her emphasis on adult social, emotional learning and skills, as these are critical in supporting youth toward the same.
Prior Speaking Experience: Tammy has presented at dozens of conferences and trained hundreds of educators in districts and schools in US and British Columbia. Some of these include: American Middle Level Education National Conference (2013, 2017, 2018) , National Anti-Bullying Conference (2010), National Evidence-based School Counseling Conference (2017, 2019), British Columbia School Counseling Conference (Keynote, 2015; Conference presenter 2014); Annual Washington School Counseling Conference (2000 to current year); Social Thinking Providers Conference (2014); Nurtured Heart Approach International Summit (2011, 2013, 2015); Ophelia Conference, Chicago (2010); Patterson School District, CA (2011, 12); A4LE National and Regional Conferences (2018, 2020) – and over 30 local schools and agencies.
Tammy also does parent coaching and parent groups designed to support parents dedicated to building capacity in their children (and themselves) to manage the inevitable challenges in life.
In addition to work as educator and parent coach in the greater Seattle area (and via lovely Zoom), Tammy is a mom of two now young adult daughters, wife to a talented and fun husband, and owner of a delightfully amusing (and larger than expected) bernedoodle named Roscoe.
